The penetrant testing method is commonly used for the inspection of non-ferrous materials and non-magnetic materials such as aluminum, stainless steel as well as other materials which can not be inspected by the Magnetic Particle method
The penetrant testing method is primarily used for detection of surface breaking defects not always visible to the naked eye. Common surface breaking discontinuities typically detected include;
- Seams, laps & cracks in forgings
- Porosity & hot tears in castings
- Porosity & cracks in welding
- Fatigue and stress cracking on in-service components such as hooks, shafts, bearings, aircraft structures
